Your Rights As An Apprentice

By Dayna Spear, July 18, 2018

Hey everyone! I hope you’re all well.

Today’s blog post is all about what your rights are as an apprentice. Yes, terribly exciting, I know, but I promise I’ll make it as interesting as can be, as it is a super important topic to cover!

If you’re doing an apprenticeship, you have complete rights and you’re protected just like any other employee. Let me explain!

Time Off

You’re entitled to annual leave with an apprenticeship, as you are in any other job - you’re allowed 20+ days holiday per year (depending on what your employer gives you) in addition to bank holidays.

Minimum Wage

Apprenticeships are all fully paid, and you’re completely entitled to the National Minimum Wage. The current minimum wage for an apprentice is £3.70 per hour, however the majority of employers do often pay more than this. This rate, however, only applies to apprentices under the age of 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in the first year of their apprenticeship. If you’re an apprentice over the age of 19 and have completed your first year, you must be paid at least the minimum wage according to your age.

Hours You’re Paid For

As an apprentice, you must be paid for both your normal working hours and also your apprenticeship training. If you’re not sure about the difference between these, read below!

The 80/20 Rule

In case you weren’t aware, apprenticeships are split into two parts - on the job and off the job training. Since you’re learning a new skill and working towards a qualification, you’ll generally spend one day a week in a college or training centre, and the rest of the week in the workplace.

I can’t stress enough that an apprenticeship is a ‘normal’ job and you should be treated like every other employee! There’s more to an apprenticeship than making the tea, boring mundane tasks and being given all the ‘rubbish’. Actually, that has no place AT ALL.

An apprenticeship is a real job. Make sure you’re on time every day, impress and try your hardest as a full-time employee!

That rounds up today’s post, guys. I hope I’ve given you some kind of insight on the rights you must have as an apprentice and opened your eyes to your entitlements!
