What Is An Apprenticeship And How Do I Find One?

By Dayna Spear, May 09, 2018

Hey everyone! I hope you’re all well and have been enjoying the glorious weather this bank holiday weekend. I’ve been loving it.

Today, we’re going back to basics for those of you who are newer to Further My Future and need it stripping back a bit. We’re telling you exactly what an apprenticeship actually is, and how you can find yourself a good’un. Let’s get stuck in!

What is an apprenticeship?

Let me explain. An apprenticeship is a system of training where you combine working on the job and online/classroom learning. You'll be employed in a job role, while also studying for a formal qualification; usually one day a week at a college or training centre. The reason that a lot of young people favour apprenticeships over traditional jobs or even university is that they combine the best of both worlds - you're still technically in education and working towards new qualifications, but also gaining real, valuable work experience.

What industries can I do an apprenticeship in?

There are quite literally hundreds of job roles that you could become an apprentice in. The 'levels' range from 2-7; 2 being the equivalent to 5 GCSE’s, and 6+ being the same as a university degree. If you want to learn a bit more about what the levels of apprenticeships consist of, click here.

Whether you want a physical, hands-on apprenticeship like Welding, Hairdressing or Carpenting, fancy being more office based with Business Admin or Accounting, or have your heart set on taking up a new apprenticeship route to become a Teacher or a Nurse, there is something for you. There are so many opportunities you may not have even heard of. Exciting stuff!

How do I find a good apprenticeship?

Not to brag or anything, but this is where we are brill. Why are we brill, you’re probably wondering? Essentially, we have you tell us all your ambitions, interests and skills, and we do the leg work for you, helping you identify the best opportunities possible. Sound good? We think so too.

Lots of young people find it difficult to find apprenticeships, because, well… the resources just aren’t there. Apart from a few confusing, unclear or positively empty websites here and there, young people aren’t presented with enough info on how to land their ideal role.
