Unknown Opportunities

By Dayna Spear, September 27

In the past year or so, as I’m scarily soaring faster towards adulthood and having to make genuinely important decisions *eek* it’s become apparent to me that there are so many unknown opportunities available to young people – some of which I’d never even heard of.

I don’t want to sound like a cringeworthy cliché, but the world really is your oyster, especially when there are so many careers and paths available to young people that most have never even heard of.

Going through school or college, you will probably feel pressured to know exactly what you’re doing with your life. This is ridiculous because A) I’m 19 and to be honest, still can’t even tell the time correctly and B) Let’s be real – we’re not even allowed to buy a beer when we’re 17; how are we supposed to determine our own futures?!

Since working with Further My Future, I’ve learnt about tonnes of jobs which I didn’t even know existed, or just wasn’t aware you could get apprenticeships in.

I’ve also learnt that there are heaps of careers you can get into via an apprenticeship, and that university really isn’t the only option for young people.

Don’t get me wrong – if you want to be a Doctor, a Teacher, a Psychiatrist… of course, you’re getting that degree. You’d hope these kinds of professionals had some sort of formal studying!

However, I know so many young people take up degrees simply because they don’t know what their other options are.

I know a great example of this: myself! I’d always assumed I had to gain a degree to do my dream job. It’s silly, but I had no guidance to tell me otherwise!

I wouldn’t want anyone else to make the mistakes that I did, so I’m here to tell you about the many, many other options you have.

Not only are there hundreds of apprenticeships new and old, some even offer degrees whilst paying you a wage throughout. For example: nursing. A nursing apprenticeship is currently being developed which includes the degree and necessary training… minus the debt! Winning.

The same goes for other apprenticeships such as Construction, Nuclear Science and more. So many unknown opportunities…

It’s true that in our day, there is a significant ‘skills gap’, where people are leaving university with a great degree... but zero experience. This means that they lack what employers are really looking for.

However, with an apprenticeship, you can A) learn a new trade or industry, B) earn money whilst you’re at it and C) gain sought-after experience, all in one. It’s a win-win situation!
