Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well.
Today’s blog post is all about interviews *screams*.
In a recent twitter poll we ran, 88% of voters said that they usually feel nervous going in to interviews.
Even though I’m only the humble age of 19, I’ve already had experience being the interviewer as well as the interviewee, and I know how nerve wracking and intimidating interviews can be. My main tip? Relax!
Be yourself and, although it’s easier said than done, radiate your skills and confidence. You've got this!
No matter how nervous you may feel, you can do it, and, at the end of the day, there are sometimes hundreds and hundreds of applications for 1 apprenticeship position. Good on you for getting an interview in the first place, and - if it’s meant to be, it’ll be!
I thought it would be helpful to devise some easy tips and tricks to help give you that final push before your apprenticeship interview, or give you some advice for the future - let’s go!
- Be on time - as goes for any sort of interview, please don’t be late with a rubbish excuse; if you want to work for this company, they need to trust that you’re punctual and prepared!
- Research the company beforehand - being knowledgeable about the brand you’re potentially going to be working for is key. It’ll impress them if you’ve done your homework and can talk about things like current promotions, offers or awards they’ve won.
- And please, don’t walk in chewing gum. Treat an apprenticeship interview just like any normal job interview; look smart, presentable and all that jazz.
Honesty Is Key
A very important point is to BE REAL - never exaggerate your skills, talents or qualifications (not assuming you would, of course.)
Don’t risk it. It will only come back and bite you in the backside when you’re asked to present a certificate and you’re sitting there like a lemon.
An apprenticeship can be a very big jump from school or college- make sure that if you are successful and get offered the job, only accept the role if you really do want it.
If it’s right for you, go for it! If you’re unsure, be honest and don’t take it up. You have to remember, it is a commitment!
An apprenticeship interview may seem daunting, especially if it’s for a role you have 0 experience in.
But, you have to remember - you don’t necessarily need experience in the field you’re venturing in to. Apprenticeships range from sectors such as beauty, finance, sport... some of which, things you would never have touched on at school or sixth-form.
You will be taught absolutely everything you need to know during your apprenticeship; if you’re willing to learn, you can do anything!
This is definitely a key point but also easier said than done. It’s important to branch out in interviews and show off your skills and personality in a way which will help the employer to see why you’d be beneficial for the company.
Picture yourself walking out of the interview feeling like you’ve succeeded, and focus all your energy on being charismatic and relaxed with your interviewer. Don’t be afraid to ask your own questions, and never apologise for having ideas or queries. Uhh, within reason, of course.
So, that seems to finish this short but sweet blog post of interview tips. I really hope this has helped you in some way - let me know over on twitter what you think!
