Feeling Left Behind - #TheChoiceIsYours Part 1

By Dayna Spear, September 25

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all doing well and not freezing to death. Our office is currently like the Arctic right now. No, you’re the dramatic one… 🙄

Anyway, today we are kicking off the first part of our brand new 3-part campaign… #TheChoiceIsYours.

What we mean by this rather bold hashtag is that when it comes to your future, ultimately, you have a choice. What you put in is what you get out, even with us. Keep your eyes peeled for more content in the next couple of weeks about searching for your next step, job-hunting and most excitingly, how we can help YOU.

This week, we’re talking about feeling left behind.

Despite September being full of new starts for some, for others it can be a bit of a rubbish and daunting time if you don’t know what your next big step is going to be. If you’re in this situation, keep reading… we’re here for you!..

Being The Friend Left Behind - University

If your friends have all moved away for university this month, it’s understandable that you might be feeling a bit lonely or concerned about what you should be doing if you’re the only one still at home.

Firstly - relax. If you simply aren’t sure what you want to do yet, there is no need to panic. This is not a decision to be rushed, and from my experience of going to university for a year, tonnes of the students were 2/3/4/5+ years older than the standard starting age of 18. Just because it’s not for you now, that doesn’t mean it never will be.

But, If you’re not sure whether university is actually for you, check out our blog post which summarises everything: The Pros And Cons of University. Sure, it’s right for some, but it’s certainly not a ‘one size fits all’ situation like it’s made out to be.

Not Got That Job?

On the contrary, if all your mates have jumped into the world of work or got apprenticeships and you’re feeling a bit stuck, we can help you. Not knowing what you want to do career-wise is such a common and stressful problem for our youth - at such a young age, how can you know, really? You may have family members, teachers, or even friends pushing you to decide what you want, but you just don’t know.

Often, the issue is that people simply don’t know the amount of opportunities or choices that are actually available to them. Well, that’s where we come in! If you aren’t sure what industry you want to kick-start a career in or don’t know if university is right for you, sign up to our free career matching service and we can present you with all of your expertly matched, individual options!

Never Compare Yourself

I can’t stress enough how important this factor is. Even if you’re the only person you know stuck on what to do, or you’re the only one unemployed, don’t compare yourself to anyone else - what is the point? Everyone is different when it comes to interests, ambitions, personalities and skills, so comparing yourself is so unnecessary. All it’ll do is make you feel negative about yourself, which is certainly not fair - life is too short for self-doubt or judgement 👊

Instead, work to your own abilities and your own dreams and aim high for yourself. If you don’t know how to set personal targets, check out last week’s handy blog post all about goal setting.

It’s okay to change your mind!

Always remember that it’s okay to change your mind if things don’t go to plan or they’re not how you expected. I myself went to university for a whole year before I realised it really wasn’t for me, and that I’d be way better suited to an apprenticeship.

Am I any worse off? No, of course not. There may still be a slight dropout stigma, but who cares what anyone else thinks about your personal decisions? Always put yourself first in these situations, and do what benefits YOU. I learned that I was personally better off not carrying on with uni, so I made the decision to leave. For me, I was really keen to get into the world of work and gain experience, so leaving made a lot of sense. Although it may not be ideal, changing your mind about your next step is totally okay.
