7 Benefits of Doing an Apprenticeship
By Dayna Spear, February 06, 2019
Hey everyone! I hope you're all doing wonderfully. Is wonderfully a word? Well, today it is.
We’re keeping it straightforward today with a blog post quite literally summarising the 7 main benefits of becoming an apprentice. I mean, really, there's closer to about 100 benefits, but I’ll keep it short and simple today for both our sanity. Let’s get stuck in.
1 - IT'S FREE!
I’ve met a lot of you at career fairs recently, and one thing that surprised me a bit was that a lot of you weren’t aware that apprenticeships are totally free - even degree apprenticeships! That’s right, you can actually get a degree without getting into thousands of pounds of debt. You won’t pay a penny for your training, exams or equipment - that’s down to your employer. Bonus!
2- You earn a salary
As an apprentice, you will earn your own wage just like any other employee. The apprentice minimum wage is slightly lower than the norm, but obviously you are technically ‘in training’ and learning every day on the job. Plus, getting paid whilst you learn isn’t too shabby, is it?
3- You gain a new qualification at the end of it
At the end of your apprenticeship (assuming you’ll pass; I have faith in you) you’ll gain a nationally recognised qualification. A real achievement: something to be proud of and stick on your CV for life!
4 - The 80:20 rule
Let me explain the 80:20 rule - all it means is that 80% of your time will be spent in the workplace, and 20% of your time will be off-the-job learning, so in a college or training centre. It’s a great way to ease yourself into the world of employment rather than chucking yourself in at the deep end. What’s more, it gives you the opportunity to mix up your learning a bit, making the most of both your job and the training that goes alongside it.
5 - You gain valuable work experience
Because of the 80:20 rule which I just mentioned, you really do get the best of both worlds. Not only are you learning new skills and gaining a nationally-recognised qualification, you’re building up your real work experience, which is so important in this day and age and our competitive world of work.
6 - Work in an industry of your choice
Again, following on from the previous point; the ball is in your court here! Types of apprenticeships are soaring into the hundreds now, and there’s a whopping 15 industries that these stretch across - whether you’re into Agriculture, Construction or Digital, or fancy yourself in the Legal, Finance and Accounting industry, there quite literally is something for everyone. The world’s your oyster, and all that.
7 - You don’t need work experience to start
The beauty of apprenticeships (and something that a lot of people don’t realise) is that you can enrol without any previous experience in the role whatsoever. You learn on the job and build up your skills in your employment and training, so don’t worry if you’re lacking experience - it doesn’t matter!
And there we have it. Like I said, there really are so many more benefits to being an apprentice, but I don't want to bore you with a script as long as my arm, do I?
