10 Apprenticeships You've Never Heard Of | Part 2

By Dayna Spear, December 05

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well.

It’s been 9 months since we gave you 10 Apprenticeships You’ve Never Heard Of Part 1, so we’re back with part 2! We love highlighting how many opportunities are out there that are simply unheard of - after all, how can you be something you’ve never heard of?

Sit back, grab a cuppa and learn about all the interesting, unusual and simply amazing apprenticeships that are out there. Let’s go!

1 - Arborist

A Level 2 apprenticeship, the role of the Arborist is to plant and maintain trees. Any tree-huggers out there, I urge you to apply!

If you’re a dab-hand with a chainsaw or love being up in the tree-tops, this is one for you! There’s also loads of room for self-employment in this job, too!

2 - Airside Operator

An Airside Operating apprenticeship will require you to be alert at all times - you’ll learn to monitor airfields to make sure aircrafts take off, arrive and move around safely! If you’re terrified of planes or anything that flies (like me), then maybe this isn’t the one for you...

3 - Custody & Detention Officer

Don’t worry - this apprenticeship doesn’t require you to put schoolchildren in detentions. You’ll learn to ensure people in prisons are held in a safe and secure environment. This role may be better known as a Prison Officer!

4 - Probate Technician

If you fancy yourself in a career in the Legal sector, why not consider becoming a Probate Technician? It’s all about assisting Probate Lawyers, who basically decide what to do with the assets/estate of someone who’s passed away. You can apply to this standard without any prior legal qualifications, too.

5 - Prosthetist/Orthotist

This degree apprenticeship sounds super interesting, not to mention different! It’s all about providing solutions to patients who have lost limbs or who have issues walking. A very rewarding role, I think!

You might end up specialising in Prosthetics or Orthotics, but you could potentially carry on in both areas.

6 - Survival Equipment Fitter

One for those seeking some excitement in a job that’s a little different from the usual - as an apprentice Survival Equipment Fitter, you’ll learn to maintain aircraft and personal survival equipment.

7 - OME Professional

OME stands for Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives, and with this degree apprenticeship, you’ll analyse and evaluate technical information and ideas to come up with solutions to problems regarding these hazardous materials. It’s a challenging career, but invigorating nonetheless.

8 - Brewer

That’s right - you can actually get an apprenticeship in beer-making. Is there any better opportunity? You’ll learn to make beer at specific production stages, or in its entirety from scratch! What’s more, you don’t need any brewing skills or experience to start off, either.

9 - Bespoke Saddler

It does what it says on the tin - as a Bespoke Saddler, you’ll learn how to make and repair horse saddles. A great route for those of you who want to work in the Creative industry doing something a little unique!

10 - Geospatial Survey Technician

It’s okay - I didn’t know what this meant, either. A Geospatial Survey Technician collects geospatial data to use in maps, SatNavs and GPS systems. Let me explain - Geospatial data refers to geographic position on the earth, so things such as roads, rivers, oceans and more.

And breathe! There we have it, guys - 10 apprenticeships you’ve hopefully, probably never heard of.
